Publishers

Since setting up my editing business in 2012, I’ve copyedited and proofread hundreds of non-fiction titles in the humanities and social sciences.

I’m trained in copyediting and proofreading by the  Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) and The Publishing Training Centre (PTC), and have a PhD in sociolinguistics. I’m also a Professional Member of the CIEP.

My experience and skills

I’ve worked on books for publishers including Taylor & Francis (Routledge), Critical Publishing, Practical Inspiration Publishing, Manchester University Press, Bristol University Press and University of London Press (via Newgen Publishing UK). If you’d like details on the titles I’ve worked on, please email me (k.finnegan82@gmail.com).

I can apply different levels of editing – from a very light copyedit focused on spelling, grammar and punctuation errors to a very intensive copyedit requiring changes to sentence structure. In all cases my editing philosophy remains the same: to ensure clarity and maintain the author’s distinctive style.

Usually I work within publishers’ Word templates and can also tag manuscripts in preparation for typesetting. If you’d like a particular house style applying, this is no problem at all. I also ensure I keep an updated stylesheet for each job.

I enjoy reference formatting and am proficient in a range of styles (e.g. APA, Harvard, Chicago, MLA, publisher’s house style). I also cross-check the citations and references as part of my standard service, raising any queries with the authors.

For proofreading, I mostly work on-screen in Adobe Acrobat, but am also able to work on paper, applying the BSI proofreading marks.

Efficient and reliable

You can rely on me to work accurately and reliably to the copyediting brief, raising any issues with the project manager as they arise. I have excellent attention to detail, always striving to give my best effort to all projects. I’m always friendly and considerate when working with authors, aiming to be as helpful as possible in my author queries.

Subject areas

I work on a range of content within the arts, humanities and social sciences. I especially welcome work in the following areas:

  • education
  • psychology
  • linguistics
  • politics
  • history

If you think we could work together on an editing or proofreading project, please feel free to contact me. Look forward to hearing from you!
