Hi, I’m Dr Katie Finnegan, a freelance academic editor and proofreader with over 13 years’ experience. My clients include publishing companies, academics and students.

I’m a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) and have a PhD in sociolinguistics.

My work with publishers

I’ve worked on hundreds of non-fiction books (both UK and US English) in education, linguistics, the humanities and social science.

I especially welcome editing texts in history, psychology, education and linguistics.

I can work to any brief, applying house style to the main text and references. I have excellent attention to detail and work hard to ensure consistency in spelling, capitalisation, grammar and punctuation.

I enjoy working with authors and always try to be as helpful as possible in my suggested edits.

My copyediting and language editing service means you can trust your text will flow well with good clarity, cohesion and coherence. I can also format your journal article to meet the target journal requirements.

I often work with academics and students who have English as a second or additional language. This is a specialised area of editing that I really enjoy, so please get in touch if you think I can help you.

How I work

I edit in Microsoft Word with track changes turned on so all my edits are visible. When the manuscript is ready to return, I leave author queries as Word comments. I try to be as clear as possible to make my queries easy to follow.

Rates

How much I charge depends on the level of intervention needed, with the minimum amount charged aligning with the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading’s suggested minimum rates. Please send me your manuscript for a no-obligation quotation. As a rough guide, for copyediting and academic proofreading for private clients, my rates range from £15 to £24 per 1,000 words.
